As of the time I ordered these radios, according to the FCC "VHF/UHF radio is capable of operating outside of the amateur radio bands, it can not be imported, advertised, sold or operated without an FCC equipment certification". This means that this company sold me radios that were illegal to sell and illegal for me to use!!!
I purchased this set of Retevis RT5 (8 watt) radios, with the included programming cable, to replace my "blister pack" GMRS radios. WOW! What a BIG difference! These radios are INCREDIBLE! I had the opportunity to test them today...out to 6 miles in town/country mix...REAL WORLD NO KIDDING 6 MILES! That's successfully transmitting and receiving. I currently
hold an FCC GMRS license (and will test for my ham license soon) so I was only able to test the GMRS and MURS capability thus far. But I will be able to test the 2 meter band capabilities of these radios soon. I was able to receive and transmit much better than the blister pack radios though. I was using the Retevis RHD-771 aftermarket antennas on both radios at the time of my test and not the included "rubber duckie" antennas. They worked FLAWLESSLY! I used the Retevis RT5 software (instead of CHIRP) from the Retevis.com website to program the radios (using the included USB cable) because it seemed more compatible with the RT5 radio when assigning power levels. And what's even BETTER than these radios was the customer service that ANGELA provided (she went ABOVE AND BEYOND in ways that other companies can't EVEN come close to). I am going to use these radios primarily for outdoor recreation (i.e. camping, fishing, etc.) but also for every other event that life pops up in front of me. These would be GREAT for family reunions, farm communication (between combine, tractor, etc...been there done that!..) you name it. For the price, these radios are UNBEATABLE! I am VERY happy with these RT5's and JUST as happy with the INCREDIBLE customer service provided by Angela and Retevis!
We have alwaysed used the Motorola, Cobra and Uniden Wally talkies for our camping, hiking and mountain bike trips. However have always had issues with reception, clearity, and people can listen in even with privacy codes (blocks people from talking to you but they can still listen in). So we decided to give RT5 a try...WOW! We have been so impressed with the battery life, range in and out of the city and the sound quality compared to the other units. The additional features like dual band, capabilities of connecting to repeaters for additional range and the ability to customize the radios utalizing the included USB cable takes it to another level. Now it doesn't stop their, since we are new to this kind of radios we had a few challenges and reached out to customer service through email with prompt reply considering the time difference...They truly stand behind their product 100%.
Bought these walkie talkies for our RV caravan from Arizona to Yellowstone National Park. These are great walkie talkies with great range. On the high transmission power setting (7-8 watts), we had about 2 to 3 miles of clear communication range in a mountainous environment. Much better than Motorola walkie talkies which advertise 36 mile range at 3 watts. Reality is even with 7 watts of power you're lucky to get 5 to 6 miles of range. Motorola should be shut down with those ridiculous range claims!
The Retevis RT5 is a well-built walkie-talkie with many features, that feels and operates like a much more expensive walkie-talkie.
My disappointments are: 1) the charging cradle is very poorly designed and not durable. It's very hard to get the walkie-talkie to sit in the cradle correctly so that it charges. I bought two of these walkie talkies and one of the cradles is already not working. A redesign is badly needed for the charging cradle. 2) The power cord supplied with the charging cradle does not fit the AC inlit on the battery itself. Why in the world would you design it like this? Why in the world wouldn't you design it so that the AC plug can be plugged directly into the walkie-talkie so that those of us with 110 outlets in our vehicles can plug it straight in to maintain power while on the move?
Despite the charging cradle and inability to plug the walkie-talkie directly into a car's 110 power source, these are great walkie talkies for the price and I highly recommend them.
Have not used the two-way radios a lot yet but so far they work great. Very pleased with battery life. Thought the operating instructions were complicated for a non-ham radio operator and was curious how I could obtain a auto battery charger for the radio. Contacted customer support who advised that the battery charger is currently not for sale in the U.S. Quickness of responses provided by customer support were great. Possibly the best customer support I have ever received. Very pleased with the radios so far and if it wasn't for the complex user instructions and lack of availability of the car charger in the U.S. I would have given a five star rating.

Excellent value for the money. Sound quality is crisp and clear unlike the muffled voices on most radios. Use these and truck mounted radios to communicate with other tow trucks in the general area or down the highway. excellent for communication when searching a large mall parking lot for a vehicle or canvassasing the streets for a car that a customer didnt give you a good location for. Will go pretty far in open areas but is limited to less than a mile in heavily urban areas especially around lots of other signal interferance. Its great to be able to talk on a radio instead of dangerously messing with a distracting phone while driving. Programming is quick and simple and shipping was fast. Both charging docks worked fine I'd recommend also purchasing a 12v car charger just in case your out camping or anything that takes over a day but so far havent had any issues with low batteries even with heavy use all day. Just make sure that you are operating on legal channels and not interfering with any emergency frequencies in your area.
