I use radio headsets during professional drag races and this headset provides good hearing protection. The cars are extremely loud and can cause permanent hearing damage if the sound is not muffled. The ear muffs on this headset are snug, which is necessary to muffle the outside noise. The microphone on this headset is not very good and has provides very poor audio. Although it a noise cancelling mic, it seems to cancel transmitted audio as well. I called Rugged Radio tech support about this issue and was told that the mic had to be directly centered on the user's mouth and just about touching the lips. Despite that advice, the mic is unacceptable for use. Now, to ensure it was not my radio that was faulty, I tried using the mic on 2 other radios of different manufacturers. Same thing with the very poor audio on all 3 radios I used for this headset. By the way, I used the Rugged Radios cable specific for my radio.
Note: this headset does not come with any cable to connect your radio to it. You have to purchase the cable specific to your radio as a separate item. The headset is equipped with a 5-pin female mini-XLR (airbus plug) connector as the interface connection for your radio cable. It also has a 3.5 mm female connector on the other side of the headset that will enable you to plug in a device such as a scanner, ipod or similar equipped with a 3.5 mm male connector. This may be helpful as I can carry my main radio plugged into the mini-XLR and a radio scanner plugged into the 3.5 mm connection. I can listen to 2 radios simultaneously and/or use the scanner radio as a back-up. Despite the poor performance of the mic, this is a nice looking and effective headset for killing loud noise.
First, if you are looking for a headset this is about the best value you can find. I am very satisfied with the audio and the quality of the build after initial testing. For my uses, I direct video crews at concerts which requires me being able to be in contact with shooters all over the rock venues I shoot at. Very happy with how this protects my crews hearing as well at loud events. Build quality seems very good especially given the price.

Only thing I don't like is the ergonomics. I dont like how the rigid headband is essentially flat, i feel like a rounded rigid part with some spring to it would make these fit better.

Overall great product though. Will be buying a few more for additional radios in the future.
Working around loud equipment can be hard to communicate. With these I’m able to accomplish just that. However, i feel like the set wants to pop my head like a zit. It is tight, and one of the straps broke. Ugh.
I've had these for some months now and tried many configurations and spent around $100 to make these have any use at all, just to find out that they're so uncomfortable that they're mostly useless. I wanted to be able to use these with a handheld radio and to listen to my phone. Aux cables die within minutes for some reason with these headphones and required an amplifier so I could hear anything, even with volume maxed out. I got a Bluetooth adapter and that works pretty well. I got a rugged radios adapter for my radio and either the cable or the port doesn't work on the 5 pin, so I'm still unhappy with that aspect.

They do block out noise and I will modify these so they're more comfortable, but there's a reason these aren't listed on the rugged radios site. Don't get these unless you are looking for parts.
Bought 4 of these headset's for crew use in the pits and 2 of the 4 function as designed out of the packaging, the other 2 are garbage...neither of the inoperative headsets' PTT functions work so not able to transmit on either, tried changing the cords and radios out with known good ones and still nothing, the headsets just refuse to work. I get that they are not Racing Electronic $250 headsets but you'd think I would have gotten some use out of them before they broke...take your chances or do like I did, just go spend the money on RE stuff and then you can be positive you are getting quality you can depend on.

Description

This Behind-The-Head style headset provides tough, reliable, 2-way radio communication and can be used in applications including auto racing, industrial / heavy equipment operation, recreational off-roading and much more!

Designed for use with a two-way radio or intercom, this headset can keep you communicating even in high noise environments.

Features a DNC microphone for clear transmissions and Clear Hear speakers for unsurpassed audio performance.

Rugged headsets are built to perform in extreme noise environments - combining the latest technology with firm, yet comfortable fit for optimum communication.

The 5-pin port on this headset allows you to use virtually any handheld radio on the market using a radio specific jumper cable (these are sold separately as there are many different connector types depending on the radio being used).

These headsets are designed to be used with a separate communications device (2-Way radio, intercom, etc.).

Used this item for the 1st time to listen in on scanner chatter at the NASCAR race in Martinsville last weekend. Comfortable fit and good volume control so I did not have to mess with the radio volume itself.

I have not tried the PTT function for the headset, but I'm sure it works properly.
If you’re broke and need one in a pinch, it will do the job. Other than that there is a reasonRugged does not sell this particular one on their website. They are uncomfortable and the audio quality is crap. Save yours money and buy one of the several upgraded ones!
In my work, I wear a headset full time. These noise cancelling ear phones are great as I am around race cars all the time; however, the headset itself is extremely tight, and by the end of the day, my ears are sore. I continue to try to stretch out the band to increase comfort. I have a rather small head; I can only imagine how uncomfortable these would be for a man with a normal sized head. The volume is good as a receiver of communications; those to whom I am communicating indicate that the volume is clear but low. We continue to adapt.
