BAOFENG UV-5R Two Way Radio Dual Band 136-174/400-480Mhz Walkie Talkie 1800mAh Li-ion Battery

BAOFENG UV-5R Two Way Radio Dual Band 136-174/400-480Mhz Walkie Talkie 1800mAh Li-ion Battery
Love it! I also love that people with expensive radios say I'm coming in loud and clear! In the suburbs, I hit repeaters over 20 miles away all day long. I was worried that I wasn't going to get much out of such an inexpensive radio. I was wrong. Even works in the car, but shielding effect is noticable as expected. When I check into Nets, they easily repeat my name and call sign. I've monitored myself with apps to hear myself. Loud and clear. Easy programing with CHIRP. Good enough for scanning, not fast, but usable. I also have the UV82-HP. But I carry this to work and back. Not much else to say except buy one.
This radio is personally the best value for your dollar, especially with the Kenwood adapter that comes integrated into the radio. This transceiver is great for someone looking to pick up the hobby, for those within the preparedness community, MAG [Mutual assistance groups], or just general ham training if you lack a "HQ".
This radio is easy to learn, and while the layout and UI may be simplistic, the radio is surprisingly easy to program by the user using said UI if you have a reasonable amount of patience. You can also program it through CHIRP with a USB programming cable, which is honestly preferred if you aren't going to be on the move (or if you want more in depth channel programming).
Despite all of this please be sure to follow the laws in your area in regards to communication restrictions on the 70cm bands and 2m bands, do not transmit on any frequencies that would land you in a courtroom with a nasty fine. Get your ham licence just to be on the safe side!
THIS ISN'T A WALKIE TALKIE. this is a basic handheld HAM radio. as in, designed for use on VHF and UHF frequencies. if you've just passed your tech license exam, this is a great place to start. you can program it with the keypad and save freqs in place. you can also use CHIRP to program it IF you get a cable to do it, and have a PC to do it. my chromebook won't support CHIRP, so i have to program it manually. but it's a great place to start. good quality for the price. and you can do basic upgrades to it too, when you're ready or interested. once you're ready to upgrade your ham radio experience, you can keep these as perfect emergency/backup/ht units. when i'm ready, these will become the backup emergency units to keep in our cars, with repeaters and freqs programmed in. but as i'm a noob to HAM and a tech license, they're a great place to start. and once i've gotten my use out of them and learned what i want, i'll upgrade to a nice unit. probably still a hand unit. or i could upgrade these with bigger batteries and antennas.
anyway, don't get confused by bad reviews. these are likely from people who just wanted walkie talkies, and instead got much more powerful and useful HAM radios, which they're not licensed to use. but even if you're not licensed, ANYONE can use these to transmit in case of emergency. and anyone can use them to receive and scan or hear emergency broadcasts, etc. anyone can listen to a ham radio, but to broadcast, you gotta have a license.
The radios were off frequency bad.. refurbished stuff from this seller I think..

Description
For what it is and what you pay, the UV-5R is still a great value. It isn't the best handheld you can get, but it is undoubtedly the best you can get for the money. It actually seems to push about the power that it advertises. Chirp is outstanding free software you can use to program it, saving you a good bit of time. The Baofeng software is also useful.
Overall, this is a great buy, as long as your expectations are set by the price point.
worked great for 2 months then 1 day the battery just fell out of it and the clip that holds the battery in will not work anymore
This little radio is extremely powerful and has a great battery life (multiple days of standby power if you enable power saving mode and don't transmit) and it has a removable antenna so you can attach something like a Nagoya, Yagi, or custom coaxial antenna to it.
If you buy the extended battery or even just another standard battery, you'll have more battery life than you know what to do with, unless you are constantly transmitting with VOX or you're constantly listening to FM radio with the volume turned up!
The stock antenna is pretty good compared to the other more expensive Baofengs, but upgrading to a nagoya NA-771 removes a ton of the faint background hiss on both rx and tx, as well as increasing the tx range quite a bit. From my bench, I couldn't really pick up any additional FM radio stations when scanning through the entire FM range using the Nagoya vs the stock antenna, but what I did notice was that every single station came through crystal clear after swapping the antenna, whereas before it would pick them all up but some stations definitely had poor reception unless I would walk all around the garage looking for a good signal path.
It has quite a few nice features but nothing digital, and doesn't have true dual watch monitoring, but with TDR turned on for me I'm able to monitor two frequencies and pick which one I care about more so if they're both active it will let me listen to the "preferred" frequency. It has dcs and ctcss codes for accessing those repeaters, and supports DTMF codes for dialing into Internet relay repeaters or echolink repeaters.
As far as ease of use, you will need the manual to decipher the different options in the settings menu. There are some websites out there that give a more detailed breakdown of the menu options and their descriptions, as well as youtube videos to demonstrate more complicated things like programming or connecting two Baofengs to make a mobile repeater. Both of those capabilities require a different cable, not included.
Finally, regarding programming, you DO NOT need to get the programming cable as you can do everything right from the radio. If you want to look up different frequencies of your local repeaters and store them in the memory channels, you can do that pretty quickly and easily right from the radio once you learn the flow. Where the programming cable comes in handy is when you want to add a hinge number of pre-programmed channels to the radio, but IMO there is no need for that. I tried it with all the virginia repeaters and found that only 1 or 2 ever had any traffic, even when I would go driving for hours and leave it on channel scan mode. Where I think the programming cable would come in handy is if you routinely traveled out of state (like from the east coast to the west coast) and you had a different set of frequencies and repeaters and settings for each location that you wanted to be able to swap between easily. When you go to the west coast you can just backup your east coast profile to save any changes you made or any new frequencies you saved, and then restore the west coast profile so you're able to make changes and save any new frequencies you find there. Then when you're ready to come back, just save the west coast profile to the computer and restore the east coast profile.
