This is not a UV-5R. The 2M band frequencies cannot be entered manually. They can be entered using CHIRP, but the radio will not broadcast on those bands. In addition, CHIRP recognises the radio as a UV-5X. The GMRS frequencies can be entered manually. It's good to listen, but nothing else works correctly.
I am an amateur radio operator and purchased this as a secondary/backup radio to my other hand held radio. As soon as I got it home, I programmed local frequencies into it and then tested it to make sure I had it programmed correctly. It would not transmit on the amateur radio VHF frequencies. It received fine, but did not transmit. After reading the manual, noticed that the VHF transmit frequency range did not include amateur radio VHF bands, so it is nearly useless to me. Will be sending it back.
I'm surprised how much this little thing can pick up, but it's my first adventure into the world of ham before I take my test. So....just listening right now, but I am getting loud and clear signals. It's not very intuitive, but the instructions included are an easy guide through how to set it up and configure the frequencies. Looking forward to being able to talk back. 73
I use these at work... we have a radio in our office, but it's handy if we need to leave the building to still be able to communicate. Sure, there are tougher radios out there, but their price matches their toughness. We can waste 10 of these for the price of one of those.
Everyone needs to prepare for what is coming. Communications is essential. This is a fantastic radio (I have 3 of them). Learn on YouTube (download the training videos and keep offline also), and you can program the radio and know everything you need to know.

These are great little radios! Our Jeep club uses them for communication while out on the trail and while convoying. Easy to program, charging station is included, battery life is excellent. Range is exceptional for their size. Highly recommend!
I received this radio and quickly discovered that it's configured for non Amateur Radio Frequencies. I couldn't use it for my intended purpose as an additional HT for 2m comms between licensed operators. Returned for refund and ordered from another vendor with confirmed reviews for the correct product.
I can't believe how great these little radios work especially given the price was so dirt cheap! These are definitely worth vthe money
