When I tested these radios, my lieutenant remained stationary at the kitchen table in my house. I then walked out the front door to the sidewalk turned north and continued walking while at the same time checking in with my lieutenant over these radios. We were able to communicate up to about 200 yards. Then they became useless. My guess is that this was due to the houses (approximately 10) between the two walkie talkies. So, these units are little more than kid's toys in a neighborhood. In this application do not expect them to be functional over 150 yards in distance.
I bought the hunter version T465 pair hoping that they would be better than the older Motorola and other brand FRS/CMRS radios. But sadly, these were a disappointment to me. Why? The transmit audio modulation on these units is low when talking normally as one would into the unit. Bad QC, one radio transmitted lower volume than the other radio, so they were inconsistent in quality.
Even more annoying to me is that the scanning mode is slow to lock on to your priority channel. Say you have your unit set to channel 20 to transmit and receive, then turn on the scanning mode to monitor for activity. It's supposed to give priority to the channel you are set to (channel 20 in this example), so that no matter where it is in the channel scan polling, if someone calls on channel 20, then it should jump to channel 20 and lock on right away so you won't miss your priority channel calls. But it does not! It is slow to detect activity on the priority channel and can take up to 2 seconds to switch to it! Therefore you can miss short transmissions of someone trying to contact you. My older version Motorola MS350R waterproof radio jumps Immediately to your priority channel as soon as activity is detected. So big minus on this T465 processing algorithm.
Another annoying minus of the T465 is that it emits a loud crashing blast of static noise every time activity is detected during channel scanning and when the radio squelches after a transmission is detected. It's as if the squelch is too slow to close the noise gate and you catch the tail end of the channel noise static which BLASTS in CRASHING LOUD. This is unacceptable for a "Hunting" radio where you might not want to disturb or scare away animals or reveal your where abouts! The older Motorola units do not blast a squelch noise like the T465 does during scanning.
When I compared the receive audio quality of the speaker output of the T465 with the Motorola MS350R radio, the T465 audio was not as good as the MS350R audio output. T465 sounded weaker and tinnier, high pitched compared to the MS350R more robust better tonal quality.
Wait, I'm not done, the LCD display and back lighting is smaller and dimmer and harder to read compared to the larger and brighter better lit orange back lit MS350R LCD display. Terrible considering that the T465 costs twice as much.
Okay, the good points are:
I liked the shape and size of the radios and that they use USB charging via a USB port so that it is more flexible in charging it when you are traveling and don't have to carry around a clumsy base charger.
I am not 100% sure of it but I think the T465 receiver may be a bit more sensitive than the MS350R receiver as there was a time where it was receiving a weak signal on channel 15 breaking squelch while the MS350R receiver sitting pretty much right next to the T465 remained silent on that channel and did not pick up the activity. But then again that just might be the placement of the radios that caused the receive anomaly.
I did not test the transmit range because from much past experience, I know that they would probably be about the same in that area.
Bottom line is that I was not impressed with the performance quirks of this top of the line new offering from Motorola.
I returned the units to amazon for refund because they are not worth it. I should mention that I am a real customer that bought this on my own and not enticed by any seller with a free radio offer. This is my review of actual purchased radio units from amazon. I was really hoping that they would be the radios that ended my search but they sadly are not. I do not recommend them due to the nagging flaws in design and especially not for the higher price they are going for at this time.
I've seen mixed reviews, but mine work great. The feel very sturdy compared to more inexpensive less feature rich radios. I like the weather broadcast reception mode and alert feature. If the weather takes a turn while I'm out, I can tune into the local weather frequency and get updates. Going from high to low power broadcast is easy with the two corresponding push-to-talk (PTT) buttons. My old radios required going through mode/menu changes. The first seven channels (FRS) were compatible with my old radios. The waterproof exterior is good for all kinds of outdoor activities without worrying about getting caught in a rain shower or accidental drop into puddle/creek. The earbuds w/ built in PTT, rechargeable battery packs and charger were a bonus. I saw some other reviews said the charger didn't work. Mine worked fine. Overall, I think these are good mid-grade radios that will meet the needs of most people.
We have owned our original motorola talkabouts about ten years now. They have been great for hunting but they were worn out. So last year I got us new ones, you know the latest and greatest kind of ones. They we're horrible; we tried to like them, but I'm the end there was too much wrong with them. So I dicided to see if they had a new version of the talk about radios. We we're very pleasantly surprised. As far as Hunters we are very happy with these radios. We can understand each other clearly. Additionally everybody else can use their own radios, and they all work well together. As a sportsman I would highly recommend the new talk about. The hunter series is the one that we purchased.
We are in our early 60s and I have been spoiled by being a passenger on trips farther than our local grocery story. So when we decided to move to over 800 miles away in a remote location, I knew I'd have to make several trips as a driver. Yikes! I was so worried and my confidence was rattled. So my wonderful man decided we would buy some walkie talkies and after doing some research we purchased these. They worked perfectly and are so easy to use!

You don't need to fumble with a phone to communicate, just press the button and talk. We found that holding the walkie talkie close to your mouth made hearing the other person easier with traffic. There were times when we had crackling caused by someone else or heard others' interactions but that was rare.

We could have several cars between us and still easily communicate. We were able to communicate when not within eyesight of each other. Overall, I'm super happy with this purchase!

Radios both worked when used fully charged battery pack or 3 AA Batteries. Tried both ways. In the house. But when I took them in the field hunting one or both radios did not function at all would not turn on at all. Would only work after taking the batteries out or unplug battery packs and plug back in. I purchased in fall of 2015. I also did not use until next hunting season 2016. Could not return by then. Did this every time I tried them at different times thinking I was doing something wrong but they did the same thing every time. They are junk beware if you are looking at these Motorola T465 radios
large range i liked
